Frequently  asked volunteer questions

  • Can I apply for both technical and admin posts?
    • If you feel you would like to do either post then fill in two forms, (one for each) and send them in.
  • How much experience are you looking for?
    • As long as you have most of the essential skills and are keen and committed then you have good chance as we can teach you most things.
  • When will the next round be open?
    • In each department we have two volunteers, their start dates are staggered so that when one leaves the other will have been with us for 2 months. This means that we will need two new volunteers every two months. (One for each department). Sometimes a volunteer decides to stay for a further 4 months so we don’t recruit for that place.
  • Can I leave early?
    • We would prefer that you complete your four-month placement but if you have been offered a job or another significant opportunity then we will support your decision.
  • What will the interview be like?
    • It will be a chance for us to meet you and to ask questions about your experience. It will also be a chance for you to see what your placement will be like.
  • I understand there will be another volunteer, and am I expected to work with them, what if I don’t get on with them?
    • There will be an opportunity for you to work closely with the other volunteer and to share work, conversely you can also both work quite separately.
  • You say we can work on our own projects what facilities can we use?
    • We have a number of camera and computers that can be borrowed. We also have a small animation space that can be shared exclusively with the other volunteer during the placement. This is available all week.
  • Will I have to have a police check?
    • As we work in a school you will need to have a police check, this will take about one month and be confidential.
  • You mention we can take on our own projects, what do you mean by this?
    • If you have managed to deal successfully with your main tasks you can specialise in an area of the company you feel most interested in. With Tatiana’s help you can work on a specific aspect and try to improve it.
  • Do you provide references for your volunteers?
    • We’re happy to issue reference letters and certificates for our volunteers – let us know what your needs are and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. We do not currently run any formal volunteering accreditation schemes.
  • Can I claim job seekers allowance and volunteer?
    • Yes, (although you should double check with your advisor). You must be activley searching for work and be able to start work within one week – read this link carefully
  • Where can I get more information?
    • If you have more queries email tatiana@filmworkshop.com or call us on 020 7607 8660
