Final Cut Pro 7 Beginners

Course Overview
This course will introduce you to video editing, using the industry-standard editing software Final Cut Pro 7 (Final Cut Studio 3). With the solid grounding that this course provides, you should have few problems with basic editing in the future. It is divided into five distinct lessons, each dealing with a different aspect of video editing in Final Cut Pro. Media for use in class is provided, along with comprehensive accompanying notes.

Course Outcomes
Upon completing this course, you will:
• Know how to set up Final Cut Pro to minimise the risk of data-loss
• Be able to identify different audio/video cables and their uses
• Be able to set up an edit suite
• Be able to capture and ingest video in an ordered and logical manner
• Be able to perform a ‘three-point edit’ and target different tracks
• Understand how to mark footage and how this is useful in the edit
• Be able to edit a short sequence of digital video using a variety of edit tools
• Be able to edit audio on the soundtrack and understand how to adjust levels
• Know how to add titles and transition effects to an edit
• Be able to use the ‘Share’ function to produce DVDs, YouTube clips and other media-types from a finished edit

Lesson 1: The Foundations of Digital Video
Tapes and organizing media • Setting up a home editing system • How to wire a DV deck or camera • Identifying plugs and cables • the difference between the project file and media •Setting the scratch disk •System settings • Creating a new project
Lesson 2
: Logging and Capturing
The Log and Capture window • Saving a new project • Setting the scratch disk recap • Reel numbers and timecodes •Short cut keys and navigating through footage •Marking in and out • Batch Capture • Logging and capturing • Logging and transferring from non-tape based media
Lesson 3
: Editing Basics
Understanding the viewer window • The ‘three-point edit’ • Insert and overwrite edits • Targeting tracks on the timeline • ‘Snapping and linking • The ripple tool • The roll tool • The slip tool • The slide tool
Lesson 4: Audio Editing
Identifying peaks in footage • Editing audio in the timeline • Viewing audio waveforms • Fading audio using the pen tool • Using and applying audio cross fades • Setting audio keyframes • Using music from other sources • Using iTunes to convert audio to AIFF format
Lesson 5: Sharing Media

Adding and editing transition effects • Rendering transitions on the timeline • Titling • Markering • Outputting to tape - playback from the time line, printing to video and editing to tape • Sharing media to DVD • Sharing media to YouTube

Entry Requirements
Students should be Mac or PC literate and fluent in English.

Tutor
Tom Heycock has a degree in Film Studies from the University of Canterbury and a great depth of knowledge of the digital media world, having worked in the industry for fifteen years as a Video-Jockey, Cameraman, Editor, Motion Graphics Artist, A/V Co-ordinator and Colourist. Clients have included BBC Scotland, ITV1 Network, Camden and Southwark Councils, Glastonbury and The Big Chill music festival.
