DVD Studio Pro

Course Overview
This course uses hands-on interactive instruction to help you learn the basics of authoring professional quality DVDs with DVD Studio Pro. You will learn how to create and encode MPEG 2 video and 'author' a DVD by creating menus, buttons, interactive links and simulating and burning a DVD for playback on a computer or home DVD system.

Course Outcomes
Upon completing this course, you will:
• Be able to create a full-functioned DVD with customised elements
• Understand the DVD manufacturing process
• Be able to use DVD Studio Pro's subtitling tools
• Be able to use Compressor to encode media for DVD Studio Pro projects
• Understand the importance of testing DVD projects

Lesson 1 The DVD authoring/manufacturing process • Encoding using Compressor • Introduction to the DVD Studio Pro interface • Creating simple menus • Importing/adding video markers • Storyboarding in DVD Studio Pro • Creating and editing Slideshows • Subtitling processes • Customising a Chapter Index menu
Lesson 2 Making menus in PhotoShop • Overlay menus • Choosing highlights for buttons • The Advanced Overlay with greyscale buttons • Customising button colours •  Adding a motion background • Setting as loop point • Layered menus • Linking assets • Using Stories to create custom playlists • Multi-angle DVDs • High Definition (HD - SD downcoverting and Blu Ray) • Checking your project using Connections •  Building and Formatting your project • Testing your DVD

Entry Requirements
Students will need at least a basic understanding of an editing software package and Adobe Photoshop. Students should be fluent in English and Mac or PC literate.

Tutor
Tom Heycock has a degree in Film Studies from the University of Canterbury and a great depth of knowledge of the digital media world, having worked for the industry for fifteen years as a Video-Jockey, Cameraman, Editor, Motion Graphics Artist, A/V Coordinator and The Big Chill music festival.
