Stop Motion Animation
Course Overview
This course focuses on 3D stop frame model animation. You will be expertly guided by BAFTA-winning animator Kevin Griffiths, through the process of making a short animated film. Over five sessions you will gain a better understanding of space, timing and movement and be shown how to get the best out of your puppets. All sessions will be accompanied by film clip samples, slides, actual TV puppets and practical demonstrations.
This course will not cover puppet construction, for that please attend the partner course 'Puppet Making for Animation'
Course Outcomes
Upon completing this course, you will:
• Know how to set up iStopMotion on a computer with an animation camera
• Know how to capture basic stop motion animation
• Be able to construct simple sets
• Be able to storyboard
• Be able to animate a stop-frame puppet
• Know how to create a short animated film
Lesson Structure
Lesson 1 Introduction to equipment and demonstrations with a wide range of puppets • Behind-the-scenes of the making of a television series from start to finish • Students are supplied with puppets and practice animating
Lesson 2 Demonstrations of actual sets and props • Setting up equipment • Brainstorming • Storyboarding • Scene construction begins
Lesson 3 Clip samples and animating tips • Scene construction continues • Making props • Rigging
Lesson 4 Students continue to animate with tips and guidance throughout
Lesson 5 Importing animated clips into iStopMotion • Voice-recording • Laying sound effects and music • Exporting as a Quicktime file
Entry Requirements
No previous animation experience required. Students should be fluent in English.
Tutor
Kevin Griffiths is a Bafta award wining Animation director who has worked on commercials pop promos and numerous children's television programmes over 20 years of experience. Some of his work includes: "Old Bear Stories", "Bob the Builder", "Mouse house" and "El-Nombre". He has more recently been heavily involved in television puppetry both as a puppet operator and puppet maker the most recent programme being " The Fimbles" BBC and " Ni Ni Tree-house" for GMTV.
