Craft of Editing

Course Overview
The aim of this course is to give you a greater appreciation and understanding of the craft of editing and the role of the editor. With an historic perspective and using a hands on approach, you will be guided through the creative process including: the importance of structure and story telling; editing language and grammar; music and sound effects. Material to edit will be supplied throughout the course.

Course Outcomes
Upon completing this course, you will:
• Understand the role of the editor
• Understand the usage of language and grammar in editing
• Have learned different approaches to editing drama or documentary
• Understand the role of music and sound
• Understand timing and the use of effects
• Have gained a better understanding of structure and storytelling
• Know how to put together a shot sequence

Lesson Structure
Lesson 1 Introduction to the role of the editor • A look at an historic perspective • Final Cut Pro editing tools • Students begin to develop a sequence to cut
Lesson 2 Glossary of terms • Examples and practice • Tools and techniques • The language and grammar of editing
Lesson 3 The narrative • Looking at examples and discussing montage • Examining the role of sound and music
Lesson 4 The role of the modern editor • The power of the editing process • Editing for different genres: drama; documentary music video and animation
Lesson 5 Recap of course work • Open critique of work produced on the course

Entry Requirements
Students should be Mac or PC literate and fluent in English and have a good understanding of Final Cut Pro.

Tutor
Anna Gregory is a BAFTA award-winning editor with an extensive list of films, documentaries, adverts and TV programmes on her CV. She has been working in the broadcast industry for 25 years and has built up a deep understanding of the underlying rules and techniques of the editing process. Examples of her past programmes include. “Beyond the Clouds” – editor on 7 part series - Channel 4, “Sexual Imperative” editor on 6 part series - Channel 4, “Return to the world – Elephants” editor 13 part series - National Geographic. “Alfa” editor for advert.
